Founder and Principal Interpreter, Shackelford Strategic Counsel and Education
I Make Sense.
Human technology for a human need: making sense of what happened.
You have tried to understand what happened. You have done the work, and something at the center still has not come together.
When too much depends on getting it right, I Make Sense.
I practice Integrative Interpretation™, the structured work of making visible what is actually happening between people, so the decision in front of you rests on something true. Integrative Interpretation™ is not therapy, and it is not a competing idea; it is a complementary one. Derek Shackelford works with clinicians, and for many people this work is the missing piece. Its job is to reconstruct how an experience came to mean what it now means, and where shared understanding separated. Decisions rest on the meaning already in place; if that meaning is a misreading, what follows inherits the error, which is why you cannot afford not to make sense of what is happening.

Derek Shackelford
Founder & Principal Interpreter
I'm Derek Shackelford, Founder and Principal Interpreter of Shackelford Strategic Counsel and Education (Shack Strategies). I built this practice around a single discipline, Integrative Interpretation™, because the people I kept meeting were not short on effort. They were short on an accurate account of what had happened to them.
The discipline formed over years of organizing, leadership development and relational intervention, in rooms where the same pattern kept arriving under different names. As a cultural analyst, educator, and author, I kept seeing the same thing: most relational distress does not begin with bad intentions. It begins when meaning breaks down and neither person realizes it happened.

Years of organizing, leadership development and relational intervention
I didn't come to this work through theory. I came to it the way most people come to confusion: by living inside experiences that would not come together, and refusing explanations that only covered part of what happened.
What I learned is that people rarely need more advice. They need the experience reconstructed accurately, meaning what was said, what was heard and what was inferred, until the pattern underneath becomes visible. Once the pattern is visible, the decision usually stops being a mystery.
I don't tell people what to think. I invite them to think with me, and I hold the responsibility of interpreting someone's experience with the seriousness it requires.
My guiding principle is simple: for the benefit of all of us, at the expense of none of us.
Derek Shackelford is a cultural analyst, educator, and author. He is Founder and Principal Interpreter of Shackelford Strategic Counsel and Education, which offers Integrative Interpretation™ to individuals, leaders, and organizations. He is the author of Resolving R.A.P.E. Culture (2020), and the second edition is preparing for launch.
His work examines how relationships, identities, and social behaviors are shaped by cultural conditioning rather than individual intention alone. It has developed over years of research, observation, and applied educational practice.
He builds analytic frameworks that help people understand how they are trained to relate and respond within larger systems. The work moves between the intimate and the systemic: individual moments are examined carefully and then traced to the larger conditions that shape them, including family systems, institutions, social hierarchy, and collective belief. The aim is to replace judgment of oneself and others with analysis a person can reliably use. The work is not therapy, coaching, or motivational speaking.
The Shackelford Strategic Counsel and Education line reads: "When too much depends on getting it right, I Make Sense."
This work is for capable people who are still confused. The confusion did not come from a lack of effort. It stayed in spite of it.
It is for people facing consequential decisions in a relationship, a family, a role or an organization, who cannot afford to build that decision on a misreading. Usually the weight of getting it right is why the decision is still waiting.
I give particular attention to neurodivergent Black men, who are often interpreted by others long before they are understood. I also give it to Gen X, a generation that learned early to handle things quietly and has carried what never got named for a long time.
Why it matters now
We have more language than ever for harm, accountability and healing, and less capacity to stay in relationship once harm is named. That gap is where consequential decisions go wrong, and where most people are left to interpret alone.
I keep the work deliberately small. Each engagement is well matched, and that is what allows the interpretation to be precise rather than general.
If you still cannot trust your own reading of what happened, this is where to begin.
Most people who reach out have waited, and not from carelessness. They adapted, and they did it well enough that the people around them rarely saw what it cost.
The same conversation plays again on the drive home, and again when you cannot sleep. It has been months, sometimes years, and replaying it still has not made it make sense.
A decision about a relationship, a family, a role or an organization gets made anyway, because life does not wait for clarity. If it is built on a misreading, everything that follows inherits the error.
Someone else's account of who you are becomes the one you carry. Without an interpretation of your own that you can trust, theirs fills the space, and you begin organizing your life around it.
And the decision that matters most keeps waiting. It does not stay the same size while it waits. The cost compounds quietly, in every conversation you approach carefully and every choice you postpone.
None of this means you have failed. It means uncertainty has been making decisions for you, and you have already been paying for it.
If you saw your own situation in this, weigh the two costs plainly. Waiting has been charging you all along, and it does not stop on its own.
What you are beginning is a disciplined process, not an open-ended conversation. It moves through six stages, in the order understanding tends to become trustworthy.
The goal is not dependence. You leave without my answers, and with the ability to read your own situation accurately and decide from it.
Restores the confidence to trust your own understanding again.
Change here is not measured by agreement or by relief. It is measured by whether the experience finally holds together well enough to act from.
"He stopped replaying the conversation — not because he forgot it, but because it finally made sense."
"She returned to her work and her community without needing to be exonerated first."

You do not have to know exactly what happened before reaching out. You only need to know something still doesn't make sense.
The first step is a brief inquiry, and it is free. A few sentences about what keeps happening is enough. I review it for fit and tell you plainly whether Interpretive Counsel is the right place to begin.
If it is, we schedule your first session, the first paid step of the work. That session reconstructs one lived experience with precision, covering what was said, heard and inferred, before any conclusions or advice. Formats and investment are outlined on the Interpretive Counsel page.
You leave understanding what happened and what deserves your attention next. The inquiry is confidential, and there is no obligation to continue.
"What is going to be different about the world because you are in it?"
